Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)

STEP is a free U.S. Department of State service that keeps you informed and reachable while abroad. Enroll your trip to receive safety updates, help the embassy contact you in an emergency, and give loved ones a reliable way to reach you.

What is STEP?

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service from the U.S. Department of State that lets U.S. citizens and nationals traveling or living abroad register their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Why enroll?

  • Receive important alerts: Up-to-date safety and security information for your destination from the U.S. Embassy.

  • Help the embassy reach you: In an emergency—natural disasters, civil unrest, or a family emergency—the embassy can contact and assist you more easily.

  • Peace of mind for family & friends: If loved ones contact the State Department during an emergency, enrollment helps them locate and assist you.

Who should enroll?

  • All U.S. citizens traveling internationally, regardless of trip length

  • U.S. citizens living abroad

  • Dual citizens or travelers with U.S. dependents abroad

How to enroll (takes just a few minutes)

  1. Go to step.state.gov.

  2. Create a free account (or sign in).

  3. Enter your trip details: dates, destinations, and emergency contact information.

  4. Submit and keep the confirmation.

    • You can update or cancel your enrollment anytime from your account.

Tips

  • Update your enrollment if your itinerary changes.

  • Each traveler should enroll individually, even when traveling together.

  • STEP is free.

Note for non-U.S. travelers: Check your home country’s foreign affairs office for similar traveler registration programs.
